Sawan Mondays and their significance

The month of Sawan is considered the most sacred time for devotion to Lord Shiva. In this month, Shiva devotees worship Shiva and Mother Parvati with full devotion and true heart. Although each day has its own importance for worship, the place of Sawan Mondays is considered the most special. On this day, devotees observe fasts and offer water, milk, and bilva leaves on the Shivling to perform abhishek of Bholenath. It is believed that by fasting on Sawan Mondays, Lord Shiva becomes pleased and fulfills the wishes of devotees.

In Sanatan tradition, it is believed that from Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu enters yogic sleep (Yoga Nidra) in the Kshir Sagar. During this period, the responsibility of running the universe is taken over by Lord Shiva. This period is called Chaturmas, which is symbolic of religion, penance, fasting, and self-restraint. It is during this period that the month of Srawan falls, which is considered extremely significant from a spiritual point of view. It is believed that worshipping Shiva during this month removes the obstacles of life and brings peace and happiness to the home and family.

Now devotees eagerly await that date when Shrawan begins and they can immerse themselves in the worship of Bholenath with full devotion.

Why is the Sawan Month Special?

Sawan month is considered the most sacred time for devotion to Lord Shiva in Hinduism. In this month, devotees perform special worship of Lord Shiva and observe Monday fasts. According to mythology, during the churning of the ocean, in this period itself, Lord Shiva held the deadly Halahala poison in his throat to protect the world. Because of this, Sawan month is considered dear to Shiva. From Sawan month itself, Chaturmas begins, when Lord Vishnu goes into yogic sleep and the running of the universe is handled by Lord Shiva.

This time is considered best for religion, fasting, and penance. Offering water, milk, and bilva leaves on the Shivling during Sawan removes life’s troubles and brings peace and happiness. This is why Shrawan month is considered very special spiritually.

When is the Sawan Month starting?

According to the Vedic calendar, this year the month of Sawan will begin on 11th July 2025. One day prior, i.e. 10th July, is Ashadha Purnima. This Purnima will begin on 10th July at 1:36 AM at night and will remain till 11th July at 2:06 AM at night. In Sanatan tradition, Udaya Tithi (the date that prevails at sunrise) is considered valid, so the Pratipada date of Sawan will start on 11th July at 11:07 PM at night and will last till 12th July at 2:08 AM at night. For this reason, 11th July 2025 is considered the beginning of Sawan month.
